Displayed in this hall are decorative panels from the Story of Psyche series (1907–09) by Maurice Denis (1870–1943), one of the leaders of the Nabis, a group who took their name from a Hebrew word for “prophet”. The monumental canvases depicting episodes in the adventures of Cupid, the god of love, and his beloved, the mortal maiden Psyche, a tale which forms a digression in the novel Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass by the Ancient Roman author Apuleius, were produced to decorate the concert hall in Ivan Morozov’s Moscow mansion.
Other paintings by Denis can be found in Hall 415.
