Jordaens, Jacob. 1593-1678

«Open your Mouth when you are Offered Porridge»

Flanders, 1640-1645

The cartouche in the upper part of this work contains, written in Jordaens’s own hand, the words of a saying that the Dutch poet Jacob Cats quoted in his book Mirror of Old and New Times. It translates as “Open your mouth when you are offered porridge.” This drawing may have been connected with Jordaens’s work on a series of cartoons for tapestries on the subject of Low Countries proverbs, although this subject did not find its way into the cycle and other variants of the composition are not known.
